Infants, children, young adults who have the inherited disorder called propionic acidemia are at risk for sudden, life-threatening heart failure. In the Amish and Mennonite people served by the Clinic for Special Children the underlying gene mutation is always the same. Those who develop heart failure have the same underlying molecular defect as those who do not.
