Rehearsal - NYSC 1981

Delegates and Staph at National Youth Science Camp 1981 play their instruments at Camp Pocahontas.  Music and performance have been traditional  elements to the National Youth Science Camp experience since its beginnings in 1963. Nowadays NYSC has a several opportunities for delegates and staph to perform, and it’s common to see people practicing their talents throughout camp.

Smiles - NYSC 1975

Delegates to National Youth Science Camp 1975 explore mountain trails near Camp Pocahontas. NYSC offers delegates several opportunities to go on overnight trips of varying challenge levels. These experiences are often cited as being some of the most memorable by our alumni, and there is no better way to see the night sky than from the top of a West Virginian mountain range.

HARTFORD — Two high school students will represent Connecticut in the National Youth Science Camp this summer.

Matthew Chauvin Quallen of Farmington High School in Farmington, and Ming Zhao, of Amity Regional High School in Woodbridge, have been selected to spend four weeks this summer learning about the latest scientific and technological advances from leading scientists and science students from across the country. Embassy of the United States Trinidad & Tobago (Trinidad & Tobago): T&T winners to U.S. National Youth Science Camp 2012

April 30, 2012: Two students from South Trinidad have been selected as the Trinidad and Tobago representatives to participate in the 2012 National Youth Science Camp (NYSC) in West Virginia, USA.

The NYSC is a residential science education program that honors and challenges graduating high school science students from states across the U.S. and selected countries. It is designed to provide an opportunity for students to have constructive interaction with others and emphasize the social value of scientific careers.  Read More.

YSDE 2012

Davis WV - Students belonging to the second cohort of the Youth Science Discovery Experience presented their research yesterday, successfully concluding the spring semester of YSDE 2012.  Five student groups presented, delivering diverse talks on wind power engineering, raptor migration, greenhouse evapotranspiration, microbiology, and compostable products. The students presented their work to a crowd including both friends and family, as well as scientists working in the Canaan Valley area and representatives from the National Youth Science Foundation.

This research colloquium marks the culmination of a semester’s work researching these topics.  By participating in the YSDE program, students had the opportunity to join their peers and instructors at three research weekends conducted at the Canaan Valley Institute.  While there they met with the resident scientists of CVI who guided their projects, and acted as mentors for further research.

Spring semester YSDE 2012 also included several activities for non-academic pursuits.  The students embarked on an overnight camping trip earlier in the weekend, and during the course of the semester had the opportunity to choose from over 30 shorter seminars including mountain biking, hiking and trips to local landmarks.

Welcome to West Virginia - NYSC 1968

Professor Chuck Cochran greets delegates to National Youth Science Camp 1968.  Professor Cochran served as directer of NYSC from it’s inception in 1963 to 1970.  Greeting delegates at Yeager Airport in Charleston is a tradition that continues to this day at NYSC, and while a meeting on the tarmac may not be possible today, camp staph more than make up for it when greeting delegates within the terminal.

Preparation - NYSC 2009

Delegates to National Youth Science Camp 2009 receive instruction on trail navigation in preparation for an outdoor trip.  The outdoor program of NYSC presents delegates with opportunities to explore the world class recreation options available within the region. Climbing, mountain biking, caving, hiking, and kayaking are all options for delegates to experience.

Geometry - YSDE 2012

Students at the 2012 Youth Science Discovery Experience test their logic and reasoning skills during a whole group activity.  Students at YSDE work on small group research projects, which are supplemented by a variety of other engaging activities and lectures. At the end of the YSDE program, students present their research findings to their teachers, mentors and colleagues in a research colloquium.

The final weekend of the first cohort of YSDE 2012 is currently in session.  To see updates and photos from YSDE 2012, please visit the program site. Students will be presenting their research shortly, and we’ll be adding photos frequently, so check back often to see their findings.

Transit - NYSC 1974

Delegates to the 1974 National Youth Science Camp embark on a bus for an out of camp experience. NYSC includes several activities that take place outside of Camp Pocahontas, including a trip to Washington D.C. These experiences offer delegates opportunities to explore the scenic and scientific locations available in the region.
