The 2019 NYSCamp delegates returned from their third overnighter in the Monongahela National Forest. Delegates had the option to either Scientific Illustrations with Erica Schwarz or backpacking, climbing, caving, and mountain biking with Staph.

Erica Schwarz is a PhD candidate working in the Cardiovascular Biomechanics Computation Lab at Stanford University. Her work deals primarily with simulating the growth and remodeling of tissue engineered vascular grafts in pediatric patients with congenital heart diseases. In addition to research, Erica is interested in the visual communication of scientific concepts.

Erica Schwarz, delegates, and staph* traveled to the Canaan Valley Area for a directed overnighter. Delegates learned to draw images of scientific subjects in an accurate way to inform and communicate. Scientific Illustrations can be used to explain complicated topics to the general public. It can also to help educate scientists or medical professionals in training with highly detailed images.  After a brief introduction to scientific illustration, the group will go on a short day hike to practice their newly-learned skills.
