Independence Day holds different meanings to various people, and delegates had a chance to share their traditions with each other at NYSCamp.

The morning started with delegates collecting their state flags and presenting them before the American flag was raised with the playing of the National Anthem. The delegates ended the evening by reflecting on their experiences in America, and what the holiday means to them.

International delegates had an opportunity to share what they enjoyed about American ideals, and some also explained their county’s Independence Day or national day traditions. The 2018 National Youth Science Camp includes delegates from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Zena Pare, a Kentucky delegate, stated “this is probably my favorite 4th of July celebration, because I got to experience it with people that represent almost every state.” Pare continued by stating “It was inspiring to see each delegate showcase their state’s flag with pride.”
