The Foundation operates several residential youth science education programs, including the National Youth Science Camp, the Youth Science Leadership Institute and the West Virginia Governor's School for Mathematics and Science. These programs follow a general model which includes both academic components and challenging outdoor recreation activities. Additional programs are under development. Programs are offered as funding permits. The Foundation's upcoming program schedule is provided below,

Programs Planned for 2008

The Foundation plans to operate the following programs in 2008.

National Youth Science Camp -- a month-long program for students who graduate from high school in 2008. Each state selects two delegates to participate in this residential science education program held in a facility located in the Monongahela National Forest in the Allegheny Highlands of West Virginia. International delegates from Argentina, Barbados, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. Transportation to and from Charleston, WV, will be arranged by the Foundation.

West Virginia Governor's School for Mathematics and Science -- a two-week program for 60 West Virginia students (30 boys and 30 girls) entering the ninth grade in fall 2008. The program was held in partnership with and on the campus of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Green Bank, West Virginia. The GSMS is supported by the West Virginia Research Challenge Fund awarded by WV EPSCoR with support from the Office of the West Virginia Secretary of Education and the Arts, Kay Goodwin.

Regional Science Symposiums -- An evening event designed to introduce alumni and other individuals to the activities of the Foundation. These events are hosted locally by alumni of the National Youth Science Camp and feature a key-note science speaker.

Youth Science Leadership Institute -- a multi-week program for up to 100 students focused on international science and technology concerns. The program is held at a facility located in the Monongahela National Forest in the Allegheny Highlands of West Virginia. Transportation to and from Washington, DC, is arranged by the Foundation. The YSLI was first conducted as a pilot program in the summer of 2002 and was held again in 2006. The YSLI builds upon the more than four decades of experience hosting the NYSC and offers educational forums and recreational activities that encourage the development of thoughtful and socially responsible scientific leadership on issues such as shared resources, environmental stewardship, and sustainable development. Funding is currently being sought so that the program may be held on an ongoing basis.

Programs Conducted in 2007

The National Youth Science Foundation operated the following residential science education programs in 2007. Selection was competitive and students participated free of charge! Additional information is available upon request (nysf@nysf.com)

National Youth Science Camp -- a month-long program for students who graduated from high school in 2007. Each state was invited to select two delegates to participate in this residential science education program held in a facility located in the Monongahela National Forest in the Allegheny Highlands of West Virginia. Sixteen students from eight international countries also participated. Transportation to and from Charleston, WV, was arranged by the Foundation.

West Virginia Governor's School for Mathematics and Science -- a two-week program for 60 West Virginia students (30 boys and 30 girls) entering the ninth grade in fall 2007.
