So, you want to be a Staph member...

The National Youth Science Camp is a magical experience and the dedicated members of the Staph* are the magicians. Each year, 30 talented individuals come together to transform Camp Pocahontas from a modest CCC camp into the remarkable home of the National Youth Science Camp. While many members of the Staph are very recent delegates of the NYSC, others are more experienced individuals who find themselves transitioning between graduate school programs or careers. If you have what it takes to be a part of this extraordinatry team, please consider submitting an application.

Applications for positions on the Staph of the 2010 National Youth Science Foundation programs are now being accepted. For more information, including position descriptions, important dates, and application material, please see www.nysf.com/work. Send questions to Andrew.Blackwood@nysf.com.

Foundation Completes Purchase of Canaan Valley Property

On December 1, 2009, the National Youth Science Foundation finalized the purchase of a 111-acre tract along the Blackwater River in the Canaan Valley region of West Virginia. This is a milestone in the development of the National Center for Youth Science Education, which will serve as the future home of the National Youth Science Camp and other science education programs hosted by the Foundation. The Foundation has selected architectural firm Perfido Weiskopf Wagstaff and Goettel to develop a master plan for the facility with a goal of hosting the 50th National Youth Science Camp in the new facility in 2013. For more infromation please see www.nysf.com/center.

Foundation Receives NASA Grant

The Foundation has received a grant from NASA in support of the 2010 National Youth Science Camp and the pilot session of the Youth Science Discovery Experience.

The Youth Science Discovery Experience (YSDE) will be a project-based program in which students form research teams to address questions of current scientific concern.  YSDE expands on the research-based educational model that has proven successful at the Green Bank sessions of the West Virginia Governor’s School for Mathematics and Science (GSMS) since 2005, when the Foundation partnered with the National Radio Astronomy Observatory to offer the new GSMS option. Each research team in the YSDE pilot session will consist of six West Virginia tenth-graders, a science teacher, and one practicing scientist.  Teams will convene for an opening residential session to begin the program.  Student/teacher teams will continue to collaborate on their research projects throughout the semester with the aid of virtual consultations with their advising scientists.  Three additional on-location sessions throughout the YSDE semester will offer opportunities for enrichment activities, face-to-face collaboration, and a concluding colloquium.  The semester system will allow for two YSDE sessions per academic year.

For more information, please see www.nysf.com/ysde.

Josh

Foundation Hires Education Coordinator

In October, the Foundation hired NYSC alumnus and long-time NYSC Staph member Josh Stevens as its education coordinator. Before joining the Foundation's small full-time staff, Josh was a teacher in Anchorage, Alaska. His academic background includes geological studies at Montana State University and an M.M. from the University of Northern Colorado. Josh plays cello, guitar, piano, and mandolin. He is an avid cyclist and a fair climber of rock and ice with the good fortune to have summited Devil’s Tower, several of Colorado’s Fourteeners, and Denali. His first rock climbing experience came when he attended the National Youth Science Camp as a 1997 delegate from New York. You can contact Josh by E-mail at josh.stevens@nysf.com or by phone at (304) 550-3421.

National Youth Science Foundation Videos on YouTube

The Foundation has established a YouTube channel where it will post selected short videos from the NYSC and other programs. Here are direct links to a few:

Long Haul Tour - A 1,300 mile cycling tour with Peter Mulvey

In September, Foundation executive director Andy Blackwood and Josh Stevens joined singer-songwiter Peter Mulvey on a 1,300 mile bicycle tour from Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Boston, Massachusetts. Since 2001, Peter has been entertaining delegates at the National Youth Science Camp and his latest CD, Letters from a Flying Machine, contains a song inspired by his experience with us in Bartow, West Virginia (Vlad the Astrophysicist). If you are unfamiliar with Peter's music, you can download an MP3 version of Kids in the Square. Videographer Kathy Wittman has also posted a video-blog documenting the tour.
