Mission
The mission of the National Youth Science Foundation is to honor, sustain, and encourage youth interest and excellence in science by conducting comprehensive informal science education programs that provide opportunity for constructive interaction with others and emphasize the social value of thoughtful scientific careers. Until recently, the Foundation has carried out its mission primarily through the National Youth Science Camp, an experiential immersion into science and leadership which brings together more than 100 high-achieving high school graduates, a group of top scientists, and a talented staff for several weeks of interaction and learning at a secluded natural area in West Virginia's Monongahela National Forest. Additional programs conducted by the Foundation include the Youth Science Leadership Institute and the West Virginia Governor's School for Mathematics and Science. Additional information about the Foundations education programs and plans for the future is available.
History
The National Youth Science Camp was initiated in 1963 as an outreach program during the state of West Virginia's Centennial Celebration and was fully funded by the state for twenty years. Today, NYSC alumni, supportive businesses, and the state of West Virginia combine to provide the necessary funding to the Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization.
